Dear Ken,
Whenever you gamble your money, you should be very much prepared to lose your stakes. You keep staking in hope of winning and recovering and sometime lose all. Both incidences and questions of yours have no difference. In first case, you won big but you did not quit casino in the greed of winning more and lastly walked out with lesser profit. While in second case, you did the opposite and lost little big and recovered some money and walked out with smaller loss. Remember, winning money is difficult and losing is not.
I can't conclude your question but can tell you my approach. Suppose, I have $500 with me while entering casino, I would keep a stop loss at $300 and would not put another chip on table after that. On the contrary, if  say I reach $700, then either I would walk out that very moment or if I would believe that my method is working well and it was not just luck that made me win, I would continue further considering $700 as my bankroll and if later I go down to upto $450, I would walk out finally.
