Calculating Odds For Dozens??

Hi Guys,

I need to know how to calculate probabilities/odds for missing dozens. Such as, what are the odds of a dozen missing 3 times, 4 times, 5 times, etc. Up to 8 times.

I'm not good with using letters in my math so a simple explanation would be much appreciated. Thanks guys.

First you need to calculate the probability of a hit on a dozen, which is:

12/37

What is a the probability of a miss? you need to subtract this from 1, because

P(a hit) + P(a miss) = 1 (100%, either the dozen hits or it doesn't hit)

And we know that P(a hit) = 12/37, so P(a miss) = 1 - P(a hit) = 1 - 12/37 = 25/37

Because spins are independent, we multiply the probability by itself once to find the probability of 2 misses in a row:

P(2 misses) = 25/37 âÅ"• 25/37 = 625/1369 = 0.46

And twice to find the probability of 3 misses in a row:

P(3 misses) = 25/37 âÅ"• 25/37 âÅ"• 25/37 = 0.31

Hi Victor and Bayes,
Thanks for your input but I guess you didn't realize how mathematically incompetent I am. I have no idea how to multiply fractions, especially when you have to do it multiple times. Also I don't get how you were able to get a decimal point number from fractions.

(Obviously math was never my best subject)

Maybe to make it easier, can you just give me the odds for 6 misses in a row?

I have no idea how to multiply fractions

Hello dear Scooby, a refresh from the math class:

The number from above is called the numerator, the number from below is called the denominator.

In order to multiply fractions, multiply all numerators together, and all denominators together:

especially when you have to do it multiple times.

Just perform this same process as many times as fractions are there.

Multiply together all numerators in the fractions, and all denominators in the fractions involved.

Also I don't get how you were able to get a decimal point number from fractions.

Simply divide the numerator by the denominator.

So

-- = 5 /divided by/ 2 = 2.5

or in our case

12
-- = 12 /divided by/ 35 =  0.34

In order to turn a decimal into a percentage, just multiply it by 100.

In other words, move the point 2 spaces to the right.

So, in our case:

0.34 = 0.34 x 100 =  34%
