Extended Martingale

I have seen this posted before here several times. I think by Mike and Winner. But how exactly does this work?

I know it's 1 1 1 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 etc.

But but for example on my fifth bet is 2 units and I get a hit do I need to start again at 1 on my first bet since I'm in debt? Or do I continue down the progression to 4 untill profit?
