The simplest of these strategies was designed for a game in which the gambler wins his stake if a coin comes up heads and loses it if the coin comes up tails. The strategy had the gambler double his bet after every loss, so that the first win would recover all previous losses plus win a profit equal to the original stake.

The Labouchère system, also called the cancellation system or split martingale, is a gambling strategy used in roulette. The user of such a strategy decides before playing how much money they want to win, and writes down a list of positive numbers that sum to the predetermined amount. With each bet, the player stakes an amount equal to the sum of the first and last numbers on the list. If only one number remains, that number is the amount of the stake. If bet is successful, the two amounts are removed from the list. If the bet is unsuccessful, the amount lost is appended to the end of the list. This process continues until either the list is completely crossed out, at which point the desired amount of money has been won, or until the player runs out of money to wager.[1]

The theory behind this strategy is that since the player is crossing two numbers off of the list (win) for every number added (loss) that the player can complete the list, (crossing out all numbers) thereby winning the desired amount even though the player does not need to win as much as expected for this to occur.

It should be mentioned that the Labouchere System is meant to be applied to even money Roulette propositions such as Even/Odd, Red/Black or 1-18/19-36. When any of these bets are made in the game of Roulette, a spin resulting in a, "0," or, "00," results in a loss, so even though the payout is even money, the odds are clearly not 50/50. The Labouchere System attempts to offset these odds.

The system, also called montant et demontant (from French, meaning upwards and downwards), is often called a pyramid system. It is based on a mathematical equilibrium theory devised by a French mathematician of the same name. Like the Martingale, this system is mainly applied to the even-money outside bets, and is favored by players who want to keep the amount of their bets and losses to a minimum. The betting progression is very simple: After each loss, one unit is added to the next bet, and after each win, one unit is deducted from the next bet. Starting with an initial bet of, say, 10 units, a loss would raise the next bet to 11 units. If this is followed by a win, the next bet would be 10 units. Another win would lower the next bet to 9 units.

This betting system relies on the gambler's fallacy - that the player is more likely to lose following a win, and more likely win following a loss.[18

En prison

In roulette, the en prison rule  is an opportunity to recover one's stakes after a spin of zero, provided one's bet was even-odds (i.e. highââ,¬â€œlow, evenââ,¬â€œodd, redââ,¬â€œblack).[1] It is a variant of the la partage rule, in which a player loses only half his even-odds stake if the original spin is a zero, recouping the other half[1] (partage being French for "sharing"). In European casinos, where la partage is customary, the player may be given the option instead to place his original stake en prison ("in prison" in French).[1] The stake is left on the previous bet, and the croupier places a marker on it to show it is en prison.[1] If the bet wins on the next spin, the player's stake is returned; if it loses, it is forfeited.[1] Different casinos adopt different rules for the case where zero comes up a second time: it may be treated as won, lost, la partage or en prison

Roulette - La Partage Rule

Roulette's la partage rule is available in some online casinos, but unfortunately, not it is the exception rather than the rule. If you are a roulette player and can find a game offering la partage, then go for it as the house edge is cut dramatically.

La Partage is available on single zero roulette tables and really boosts your chances of beating the house. It cuts the house edge from 2.7% to a more much more attractive 1.35%.

Where the rule applies is when the ball lands on the tables single zero, a player only loses half of bet placed as an outside bet.

In essence this means that when the ball lands you have the same chances and odds on winning the bet but the amount of money that can be lost when zero is hit is halved.

Remember the la partage rule only applies to outside bets.
