Twister, hope you don't mind me posting one:

    As I was going to St Ives
    I met a man with seven wives
    Each wife had seven sacks
    Each sack had seven cats
    Each cat had seven kits
    Kits, cats, sacks, wives
    How many were going to St Ives?

I haven't read through the whole thread, so apologies if it's already been posted.  :)

It's a bit ambiguous, I would tend to agree with Twister and say 1, but it could be zero because it says "kits, cats, sacks, wives", which doesn't include the narrator. Also, we don't KNOW that they weren't going to St. Ives, maybe I (or the narrator) happened to pass them going in the same direction (instead of them going the opposite way as we assume when we say the answer is 1), after all, with all those sacks and cats, they're probably moving more slowly than me!

And another thing - which St. Ives are we talking about? as far as I know there are 2 (one in Cornwall and one in Cambridgeshire), so maybe I'm going to the one in Cornwall and they're going to Cambridgeshire (or vice-versa), which case the answer would be 7x7.... + 1.

So I would say - more information is needed, we don't know the answer.  :)

There are two coins in an opaque bag. They are identical except one is a heads and a tail; the other has two heads. What are your odds of getting two heads if you withdraw one coin at random, place it face down on the desk, and continue by doing the same with the second coin?

I like the complexity of Ur thinking Bayes..... but consider this also, which I NEARLY posted as my answer>>>>>>>>>

Begs the Q. How many what? People/Persons/Cats/Kits/Sacks/Wives.

If people in the First person intended, then yes its one, cause its the person asking the question, You.
If persons in the second tense, then the answer in None, since its just You, (as in 'AS I WAS Going To St. Ives)
If the variant/array from either Wives/and/Cats/and/Sacks/and/Kits then its None too as as u correctly state, neither of them have stated their exact destination!!

Hmm... these probability problems can be tricky. Intuitively, the answer would seem to be 0.5. You are guaranteed at least one head (because of the 2 headed coin) and the other coin has a 50% chance of heads coming up.

In situations like this, one has to list all the possible outcomes.

What do we know- 2 coins. Coin A has Heads/Heads faces, .....Coin B has Heads/Tails faces

The share of the coins face is>

Coin A...........Heads
Coin B...........Heads

Or Coin A......Heads
     Coin B......Tails

Or Coin B.....Heads
     Coin A.....Heads

Or Coin B.....Tails
    Coin A..... Heads


Total number of possible outcomes is 4
Number of double head chances      is 2

Therefore a 2 in 4 chance, which is 1 in 2 chance, 50% ??? or is it 33 %

because if you place them both face down, you'll have 1 tail up and 1 head up  ;D
