Apparently, 500 years ago, Spain invaded some areas south of, and in what is now called southern Philippines that were already invaded by Islam by about 200 years. 

The problem of Juramentados goes back at least that far in that area. 

I can't find the link yet, but as many as 400 years ago there are reports of Juramentados striking soft targets by surprise, like a public market, armed with a sharp knife. 

The point is, knife, kalishakov, truck...the weapon of choice is what's available.  The motive (and the superstition) remains the same. 

Centuries ago, if i recall, the turning point of Islam's invasion up through Spain was turned back in central France.  Perhaps this latest Juramentados thought that southern France still belongs to Islam?

For my non-religious American uncle, who lived on the Thames river in the 70's and early 80's (on business), it ended when he moved to Paris.  Then that ended when he moved to Spain.  In each case, he was said to have said it was because of the "hippies", how the demographic was changing.  I could never understand that. In hindsight, it appears "hippies" was a PC euphemism for Islamic devotees. 

If they can, people will migrate away from areas overrun by another type of migrant.  Where they can't move, the indigenous population might fight.
